Eric and Zac in Maui, Day 4
Today Zac and I journeyed to Hana. We went north to Kahului and then east. We stopped in Paia for an early lunch. Zac had BBQ kaluha pig and I had the chicken pad thai. From there it was a three hour drive of kiss your fanny curves and one lane bridges. This is probably the most beautiful drive I have ever taken. Here are a few pictures Zac took along the way.
We were in a hurry to meet Lee at the Hana Aloha Hale. It’s been a great pleasure to get to know Lee as we have talked on serveral occasions, prior to our arrival. Lee fed us mangos and coconuts. We even drank the coconut milk. Though Zac wasn’t crazy about the coconut. Still, this is better than the grated plastic that passes for coconut we get on the mainland.
The Hale is made using old traditional Hawaiian methods. Lashing ties the main posts and cross beams together. Then the thatch roof is lashed to the cross members. Ili ilis (small smooth stones) cover the floor of the hale and are quite comfortable the bare foot. The kitchen and bathrooms are in a separate hale. The shower is ONO!
We went grocery shopping has Hasegawa’s. It’s ham and cheese sandwiches for us. Though tomorrow night we’re having steak and rice!
Zac and I took a holoholo (stroll) through the pasture around 3pm. We ended up at this tranquil pool of ocean water named Venus Pool. It was warm and quite salty. And we saw five women there, but none of them was Venus. Here you can see Zac climbing on the old lava flow, which was very rough on the bottom of the feet!
Next we went back up the trail and took a right, which led us to a black sand beach. Only one problem, it was 60 to 80 foot slide from the top. There were two ropes we used to go down the cliff to the beach. No swimming here as the waves were very rough.
We finished the evening by relaxing in the hale talking story and making a few sketches on our sketch books, as the mangos were crashing through the trees around us. The sketching didn’t last long as it got dark quickly.
There is no electricity, cell service, or internet here. So I am typing this on my laptop and will have to upload it when we get to Kauai.
It took a drive into Hana so I could get cell service and say goodnight to Momi. We were hoping to see the stary sky and the full moon tonight, but the sky is filled with clouds. They occasionally shower us with a small amount of rain. On the way into Hana, it started to rain. So we had to stop and put the top up on the convertible. Of course, as soon as the top was up it stopped raining.
Well, I better get to sleep. It’s 8:30pm and it’s pitch black. Since we are on the eastern most point of Maui, we are hoping to catch a great sunrise in the morning. We’ll have to get up at 5am or so, since sunrise is about 5:30am.
Here are some other pictures from our trip to Hana.
