Ohana in Kaua’i, Day 8
Today was a day of hiking. We (Momi, Malia, Zac, Rebekah, John, Sara, Ruth, and myself) took a two mile hike along the Kalalau Trail to Hanakapi’ai beach. The first 400 yards or so of the trail were the most difficult, after that is was smooth sailing. This is a beautiful little beach with a fresh water stream, Hanakapi’ai river, cutting through the beach then through a short cave before it empties into the ocean. We had a lunch of sandwiches, trail mix and teriyaki beff jerky on the smooth rocks next to the stream.
Then we headed up the valley for a two mile hike to the Hanakapi’ai Falls. This trail took us past numerous mango trees (complete with falling fruit), clusters of bamboo, and criss crossing the stream a few times. This trail was not well marked. A couple of times we had a difficult time locating where the trail continued. The return trip proved even more difficult to find the trail as there were many side trails that seemed to end at odd locations.
We returned just at sunset. I’ll let these pictures tell the story of our trip.
